Daniel Cattoni was born in Bülach, a small community, located a short hop from Zurich, Switzerland. He spent his youth in various places in the canton of Zurich (a canton is similar to a province or state).
At eighteen years of age, he graduated from the Kantonsschule Zürcher Unterland in Bülach. In the fall of 1988 he moved to New Brunswick on the east coast of Canada and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physics, followed by a Bachelor of Education from the University of New Brunswick in 1993 and 1994 respectively.
During this time he got interested in photography. He is fully self taught and never took a course in photography. He has read numerous books about photography and did his own black & white darkroom work. His advise to anybody starting out in photography is to keep track of all camera settings for at least the first 30 rolls of film taken and to shoot slides to really see what happened (that's if you are still shooting with analog equipment).
He has worked at the Community College in Moncton, and taught Calculus and Physics at Bonar Law School in Rexton, New Brunswick. In December 2001 he resigned from his teaching position and acquired a commercial pilots licence. In 2002 he got rid of all his traditional film based 35mm equipment, with the exception of a 400mm lens and switched completely to digital. "I have not regretted this move and it has saved me a considerable amount of developing, but not printing costs" he says.
His latest endeavours are in aerial photography and very wide panoramics. Some of his work can be seen at Studio Forget-Me-Not owned by Gisele Maillet which is located above the Flower Shop in Bouctouche, NB.
Daniel moved from Upper Rexton, New Brunswick to Kelowna, British Columbia in the summer of 2003.
